Jean-Maurice Cormier

Water Diversions

Jean-Maurice Cormier is an Ontario-based photographer who was born in the Maritimes. His photography encompasses Landscape, Street, Travel and Semi-Abstract.

Jean-Maurice is impassioned by photography because the process of taking images forces him to slow down and be hyper-aware of his surroundings. He hopes that viewers of his images will also take that time to pause and think, cutting through all the other visual stimulations of the modern connected world.

Having been raised by the ocean, Jean-Maurice often goes back to waters’ shores to seek inspiration for his photography. Consequently, he often comes across the various ways humans interact with oceans, lakes and rivers for pleasure and adventure, resulting in the compilation of images for this exhibit.

Jean-Maurice photographs in both black-and-white as well as in colour. He prefers not to restrict himself to one or the other, and assesses which is preferred based on the contrast in light, the composition and the textures.

Of the 12 images in the exhibit, 5 show surfers on Lake Ontario. It is always interesting to see how the Winter and off-season storms create most of the opportunities for the surfers to enjoy their sport, rather than in the Summer.
Four other images illustrate the exuberance of youth diving off a pier, showing off their adolescent bravado for the camera.
The last 3 images picture sailboats awaiting their next outing adventure.
