For my SPARK 2024 exhibit, I have a series of images from Lang Pioneer Village. I have been a visitor to Lang for many years and my main area of interest for this exhibit is on the historical interpreters as they are seen working in their various settings in the village. History is all around us and the interpreters do an amazing job of keeping history alive for the many visitors to the village.

I became interested in photography in the late 60's and was hooked. I went on to study Photography at Humber College. I was employed in the photo industry working at City TV, and at the CBC on the National News service. This will be my 10th year with Spark and I would like to thank the Peterborough Library for giving me another opportunity to display my work.
Greg Burke
I am looking forward to a return to SPARK 2024 after several years on the sidelines and am particularly excited to have the opportunity to exhibit alongside the B4 group of veteran photographers and longtime Spark participants. I’m a recently retired educator who among other disciplines taught film and digital photography for over twenty years. This exhibit will be a retrospective, the process of reviewing somewhat forgotten images has made this an interesting trip back in time!
Ralph Colley
Participating in the SPARK Photo Festival over the years has provided a great opportunity for me to share with others how I see the world from behind the lens. This is my eleventh year exhibiting. I’ll have a full range of images to display at the Peterborough Public Library. I hope you enjoy this year’s offering.

Grey Matters
This body of work by Dianne Lister and Michael Harris explores natural and built environments in black and white. The monochromatic approach, if successful, simplifies an image and distills it to its essence. Shadows, contrast, tone and texture are heightened in composing the photographs. A stark contrast of black and white can create drama and a sense of timelessness, while a gradient of grey tones can produce a softer, muted quality that enhances a subtle image. In presenting less information, the images ask more of the viewer. This exhibit tests our ability to strip away the distraction and reliance upon colour and challenges us to capture the backbone of an image in an engaging black and white composition.

Reception and Artist Talk

Morgan’s work is a metaphor for life, a reflection of birth, growth, decay, and renewal. He is attracted to the way photography can convey stories and emotions related to beauty in decomposition paired with the hope of rejuvenation. His process involves snapping photos during long drives and nature-based hikes. Once back in the studio, Morgan reviews his collection of images looking for commonalities. From there he defines an idea, organizes the photographs into various thematic groups, then returns to nature in search of locations that support, challenge, and expand his initial assessment; always considering and refining along the way. Citing the work of photographers Bernd and Hilla Becher, Stephen Shore, Ed Burtynsky, and Richard Johnson as influences, Morgan is fascinated by life cycles and the impact of human interference in nature, specifically related to objects and architectural decay.
Morgan is a professional art and event photographer based in southern Ontario and is the official photographer for the Peterborough Symphony Orchestra. Morgan’s work has been exhibited at Gallery 1313, Gallery 44, Colborne Street Gallery, Rails End Gallery & Arts Centre, Kawartha Art Gallery, and Elaine Fleck Gallery. The artist holds a certificate in Photography from the Haliburton School of Art + Design and has attended photography courses at OCADU and Metropolitan University. He also holds a degree in Math and Computer Science from the University of Toronto.

This exhibit showcases the wildlife that I have photographed in the surrounding Peterborough area. I also photograph landscapes and nature (flowers, trees, etc.) but this exhibit concentrates on wildlife, specifically birds.
The Peterborough area is a hot bed for bird photography that includes Canada geese, great egrets, herons, eagles, numerous duck species, and much more. I prefer to photograph these birds as opposed to song birds, and try to capture a good portrait or the birds involved in some kind of action such as flying or catching food.
Hope you enjoy viewing my exhibit.

Mike is a self-taught wildlife and nature photographer who started his photographic journey in the 90’s. Mike didn’t know he had a creative side until he went to school to study Cartography. Throughout his schooling and career as a Cartographer and Manager of Geomatics, he won several competitions for his map designs and logo designs, but his true passion was photography.
First experimenting in sports, weddings, fashion and wildlife, he came to a conclusion that being outdoors and photographing nature, especially large mammals is what he wanted to concentrate on. Mike studied the wildlife photography of Art Wolfe, and Franz Lanting, two of the best in the world of wildlife photography, constantly comparing and trying to improve. He realized that to get better you had to be your own worst critic. Also, it helps to get off the couch and be there.
Now retired from the daily grind, Mike is devoting his days to full-time photography.

This exhibit showcases the wildlife that I have photographed in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta and surrounding area of Edmonton. I also photograph landscapes and nature (flowers, trees, etc.) but this exhibit concentrates on mammals.
Jasper National Park is a hot bed for wildlife that includes rocky mountain bighorns, mountain goats, deer, elk, bear (grizzly and black bears), caribou, moose, bald eagles and much more.
My favourite mammal to photograph is the rocky mountain bighorns. They are very majestic, powerful animals and like to smile for the camera.
Just a quick fact: did you know that elk are the most likely to attack, followed by grizzly and black bears, especially during rut?
Hope you enjoy my exhibit.

The guild, officially formed in Peterborough in 2005, consists of members with a common interest in advanced photography and high quality photographic printmaking. Many members have a background as professional or commercial photographers. They shoot diverse subjects including landscape & nature, street & travel, portraits and creative digital manipulations.
Seven members from the KPG are presenting work during the SPARK Photography Festival.

The group meets monthly to present mounted and matted prints and to receive valuable feedback about their photographs in a non competitive setting. The discussion can include: composition, contrast, sharpness, impact, mood, distracting elements, and choice of printing substrate (glossy, matt, canvas etc).
Guild meetings are held in Peterborough on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00pm, September to June. All members pay a yearly fee and work towards printing their own photographs with the assistance of knowledgeable guild members, if they don’t already do so. The group also hosts a virtual Zoom meeting once a month to share digital imagery. This allows for a wider membership.
Potential new members who are interested in achieving a higher level with their photography are entitled to attend two free meetings to see what we are all about. Whatever type of photography you are passionate about, join our community to find inspiration and to learn.

Brain Injury Association Peterborough Region (a registered business name of Four Counties Brain Injury Association) has been in operation since 1988 and celebrated our 35-year anniversary in 2023.
BIAPR supports individuals in Peterborough, City of Kawartha Lakes, Haliburton, and Northumberland counties. The association continues to support clientele with diverse needs through a comprehensive model of community support service including outreach supports, ABI Day Service supports, case management, ABI Navigation and educational opportunities such as ABI FYI.
The Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) Day Services is offered in Peterborough and the City of Kawartha Lakes (Lindsay) and virtually using Zoom across all four counties. Programming is geared to adults with acquired brain injuries, who have varied needs and capabilities. BIAPR engages our members in productive and meaningful programming activities. Photography provides our members a new and exciting way to communicate when finding words may be difficult. For others it is a way to find community and expression in unique and innovative ways.
2024 will be the tenth year that BIAPR has participated in the SPARK Photo Festival. We are proud of this participation. Every year our interest in photography grows. Members look forward to again showcasing their work in April in our month-long window display as well as hosting an Open House on April 20, 1:00-3:00pm. The BIAPR members and staff are excited to share our work with our community. Our Community Exhibit allows for us to showcase our creativity and abilities. It also empowers members to interact with people in new ways. BIAPR follows the therapeutic recreation principles of a strength-based approach to all that we do and being part of SPARK, each year is a highlight that we all enjoy.
We continue to be involved in the SPARK Photo Festival each year because photography and the images shared through our members’ eyes can transcend the challenges of living with an Acquired Brain Injury. Through the camera lens we are all equal in ability.
BIAPR’s theme for 2024 is “Textures of Life”. This theme has proven to be a wonderfully creative jumping off point. There are many textures in life that we often overlook. It has been incredible to slow down and document them!
As BIAPR’s members, volunteers, and staff – we look forward to sharing our images with our community again this year. We hope to see you peeking through the window or better yet at the Open House!

My dad loved taking travel photos. He bought me my first camera as a young teen and from then I saw the world through the lens. I realized photography was going to be my profession when I started taking photos of moments with strangers, friends, animals and anything that looked good to me.
I was lucky enough to be given a break in my late teens to freelance for the North York Mirror. This was so invaluable to the start of my career as you had to learn how to photograph just about everything from hockey to events indoors.
My professional career over the last 40 years has included many clients with much of my work for The Canadian Press. As a freelance event and portrait photographer I never had to take a break from my passion.
My husband and I decided to purchase a small cottage on Lower Buckhorn Lake in the Kawarthas. Having a second home in this beautiful and new-to-us area allowed both of us so many new photographic opportunities.
The magnificent ever-changing view from our cottage inspired me to explore landscape and nature photography more. I have been able to share my work on the local Facebook pages and have been delighted to sell a number of canvases.
I feel I have only touched the surface of so many images still to come and I look forward to many days ahead in the Buckhorn area.

Cows are pretty amazing creatures. Whenever I gently stroke a cow's head and look into its eyes I see such beauty, serenity and feel her peacefulness.
These animals can be as diverse as cats and dogs and humans. Some are quite intelligent and really quick learners while others are a little slower. Some can be bold, adventurous, bossy or friendly while others are very shy and timid.
Mahatma Gandhi described a cow as a "poem of compassion".

Undoubtedly cats have some of the most unique eyes in the animal world; instead of having circular pupils like humans, the black part in the center of their eyes are vertical. Research has shown that the thin, slitted pupils of domesticated house cats (as well as other predatory animals) allow for a wider range of muscle movements and for more light to enter the eye.
Through years of involvement in cat rescue I have come to realize, like many other physical characteristics of the cat, his/her moods are reflected in the eyes. Pupil changes will give clues: an angry cat will display narrow pupils, an excited or frightened cat will have eyes wide open with large pupils, while a happy, peaceful, mellowed-out cat's eyes will appear a shade darker than normal.
